December 5th, 2006 Newsletter
As I write this, a bit of snow has just finished falling on the Store. It’s official…in spite of global warming, there will still be snow this winter. That is good news. We’ve got more good news too. You can do all your holiday shopping at Phoenix Games, even for those non-gamers among your friends and family. Don’t believe me? I have assembled a list of ten great gifts from Phoenix Games for non-gamers. It’s right on the main Phoenix Games web site ( http://www.phoenixgamestore.com ). Check it out. Why deal with the stress and hassle of the mall when you can just come down to your friendly local gaming store. We even have free coffee for you. Bet you won’t find free coffee at mall! Sunday, December 17th, 2006 is New Folks Board Game Night. Board Game night is very Sunday from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, but the 17th is a special one. If you have never been to Phoenix Games Board Game Night, this is the time. We’ll have free coffee and snacks. Additionally, as an incentive for new folks, anyone who shows up and plays a game who has never been to a Sunday Board Game Night before will receive a gift certificate for $5 to the Store. For you students, this is a great study break. For you non-students, you don’t have finals, what’s your excuse for not showing up? For the holidays, Phoenix Games is offering a deal on gift certificates. From now until New Year’s Eve, Phoenix Games is offering 10% off gift certificates. The only catch is that they cannot be used until after Christmas, but that’s not much of a catch if you are giving them as a gift. This is like 10% off your holiday shopping without the trouble of actually shopping. These make great stocking stuffers! Stay warm, come to Phoenix Games a lot, and have a great holiday! | | Friday, June 16th, 2006 | | 7:29 pm |
6-16-06 Pirates and Board Games Newsletter
This is a shorter newsletter than normal, mostly because things have been pretty busy around here. There may be only two items below, but their quality makes up for their quantity. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 ShowingThis July, Phoenix Games is joining forces with X9 Games to bring you a private showing of Pirates of the Caribbean 2. The showing is the last show of the night on Friday, July 7th, and will be at Cinemark Theaters at the Hadley Mall. Tickets are Available at both Phoenix Games and X9 Games for $7.25 each. Tickets may also be purchased online at the Phoenix Games website (www.phoenixgamestore.com), but there is a $1.50 processing fee for each order of tickets. The fee is the same no matter how many tickets you buy, so if you do buy online, get some friends to go with you for a better deal. People are encouraged to come in costume, as there will be a costume contest. The prizes are to be determined and will be based on attendance. We look forward to seeing you there. Board Game DayEvery Sunday from 3-7, Phoenix Games hosts Board Game Day. We have one of the largest game collections in Western Massachusetts, and every Sunday we open it up to you. We have games that range from 30 seconds to 6 hours, and welcome gamers of all experience levels. If you have a friend that has always been curious about board and card games but never had the chance to get into it, bring them by. We would be happy to teach them everything they need to know. You are, of course welcome to bring your own games as well. We encourage sharing. If you buy a board game on any Sunday that we do not have on our demo rack and you open it up to play at the Store, we will give you a 10% discount as thanks for sharing with the community. | | Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006 | | 12:01 am |
May 1st Newsletter Female Gamer Appreciation MonthMay is Female Gamer Appreciation Month at Phoenix Games. To show our appreciation of female gamers, every year we line up a series of great events and discounts, and this year is no exception. We kick off this exciting month with a Backrub Competition on Friday the 5th from 6-8 PM. Two weeks later, the 19th brings a Settlers of Catan tournament followed immediately by our Gamer Slumber Party. The last Friday of the month brings the X-Men III outing, our 15 movie event! Of course, as is tradition, all female gamers will receive a 10% discount, with Wench Wednesday offering an additional 5% off to anyone who is properly “wenched up.” We are very excited about this month, and we hope that you will all find the time to drop in and check out some of the awesome events we have lined up. Backrub CompetitionThe Backrub Competition was first introduced at Phoenix Games during a Female Gamer Appreciation Month a few years ago, and it was a huge hit. It was decided that, in order to keep people from getting bored of them (as if people can get bored of a backrub competition) we should limit it to being mostly a May only event. Well, it’s May again, and time for the Phoenix Games Backrub Competition. As always, we have plenty of space for contestants, but we can only accept as many judges as there are contestants, and given the nature of the month, only female judges will be accepted. Entry is free, but the winner will receive a $15 gift certificate good for anything at Phoenix Games. X-Men III OutingOur 15th movie event shall be a group outing to X-Men III at Cinemark. Breaking from tradition, we will be attending the show closest to 7:00 rather than the last show of the night. This is because we find that many of our regulars have actually found themselves having jobs and other grown up obligations, and these make a late show less practical for them. Tickets will be $6.50 until May 8th, after that they go up to $7.25. Furthermore, we do not know how long tickets will be on sale. We will not know how long we can sell tickets until tickets stop being on sale, so if you want to be a part of the long standing Phoenix Games movie tradition, get your tickets as soon as possible. Clearance BinsWe have a few products here at Phoenix Games that have overstayed their welcome. This could be because they are less popular in our area. Maybe they are overpriced. Maybe they have poorly designed covers. Whatever the reason, its time for them to move on. To encourage these books to get on their way, we have created three clearance bins which are located on the back of the large table. In these bins are books, some of which have been discounted over 80%! Once these books are gone, they are not coming back, so don’t miss out on the great deals. Get Games for ChairsAfter the recent rearranging of the Store, we discovered that we are a bit short of chairs. We do, however, have plenty of games. Thus, we would like to trade chairs for games. We will offer between $5 and $15 of store credit per chair, depending on the condition and type of chair. (More credit might be available for really nice chairs, depending on if we can use them.) If you have some decent but boring chairs that you don’t need and want to trade them for much more interesting games, send at email to Michael@phoenixgamestore.com to set up an appointment to bring them down. I strongly recommend emailing ahead to make sure that someone who can make a deal with you is available. | | Monday, November 7th, 2005 | | 10:40 am |

Humor for the Month: From Boston Unveiled, the new Mage supplement- “To the west of Boston, Massachusetts opens up into a dense mass of wilderness and rural areas dotted with small towns. Many Bostonians go west only to attend concerts or cultural events at the outdoor concert venue called Tanglewood, but western Massachusetts has its share of mages, some leading a solitary life amid the trees, other created Awakened communities in the larger cities. Mages are clear on one thing: western Massachusetts is dangerous. Those staying on the major roads are likely safe, but the less-traveled paths are surprisingly dangerous. Indian curses on Europeans, ruins of old Hallows, violently haunted sites, and most dangerous of all, werewolf-claimed territory (and the like) are relatively common in the dense wilderness of western Massachusetts. Any mage looking for trouble will likely find it.” Well, you heard them, get down to Phoenix Games and get the stuff you need to survive out here in the danger zone! | | Saturday, October 29th, 2005 | | 3:00 pm |
Believe it or not, Phoenix Games has made it through another year, and it is time to celebrate. This wraps up our third year of bringing great games and great times to the Pioneer Valley gaming community, and it is time to celebrate. We have a full week of events lined up to celebrate!
Poster Sale All Week
We have a great quantity of excellent game promo posters that we have accumulated over the past year. There was some debate over what to do with them. Some people wanted to sell them. Other people wanted to burn them. We compromised. They shall be sold by dutch auction this week, meaning that the price goes down each day, but the longer you wait, the greater the chance that your poster will be gone. At the end of the week comes Guy Fawkes day, when we will use the remaining posters as kindling to burn trators in effegy.
October 29th-31st - Halloween Sale
Wear a costume, get 10% off
October 30th 3:00 AM - Shock Treatment
Every Saturday night at midnight, Tower Theater hosts a showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Halloween is the biggest Rocky night of the year. After the Tower Theater showing, join us back at Phoenix Games for a private showing of Shock Treatment, the miserable sequel to Rocky horror. Snacks will be provided.
October 30th 8:00 PM - Costume Contest
No one is more creative than gamers, and we want you to show us all the awesome costumes you can devise. Judging will take place at 8:00 PM, and the winner will receive a $20 gift certificate.
November 2nd - One time return of Wench Wednesday
One of the most popular parts of Female Gamer Appreciation Month in May is Wench Wednesday when all women get 10% off anything in the Store. For our anniversary, we shall have a one time Fall sample of Wench Wednesday during which all women will get 10% off anything in the Store.
November 4th - Anniversary Celebration and Massage Contest
Once upon a time, Phoenix Games played host to a tremendously popular competition known as a Massage Contest. Judging sign up is open, and competitors compete to get not only fame and glory, but also a $20 gift certificate. After that, we shall celebrate the anniversary with games, food, and more. Expect the celebration to go until we get tired and fall over.
November 5th - Guy Fawkes Day
On Guy Fawkes Day, they burn trators in effegy. We have a lovely plush George Bush, and a BBQ grill. You can fill in the rest. | | Thursday, February 17th, 2005 | | 4:38 pm |
Newsletter 2/17/05 Saturday Night Board GamesStarting February 26th, Saturday night will be board game night at Phoenix Games. Every Saturday at 6:30 PM, we shall pull out a few games from the demo rack and have a go at them. Every few weeks, we will crack open a new game or two for you to try out. If you find a game on Saturday night that you like and want to take home, you can purchase the very demo copy that you played and get a 10% discount off the regular cover price. Not only do you get a great new game for less, but you free some space for new demos to enter circulation! Twilight Imperium Game This SaturdayJames will be bringing his copy of the new version of the Twilight Imperium strategy game this Saturday at 2:00 PM. This games takes up to 6 players, and we still have a few openings left. Twilight Imperium is what I would call an old school strategy game with a big board and piles of little plastic pieces. It is a class of games that was very popular many years ago, but the strategy games made now are designed to be short and simple often losing in the process the depth that games like Twilight Imperium have. If you are interested in joining us for this game, email me so that we can save you a spot. T-Shirt LiquidationThe T-Shirts must go. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but we simply do not have the room for them. For this reason, we have marked all the T-Shirts down to $12. That is 40% off the regular price! Our supply is fairly limited, and we only have one of each size/style in stock, so come in soon to make sure you can get the shirts you want! Weekly EventsDon't forget about the weekly open events we run here at Phoenix Games Sunday - 6:00 PM - Heroclix Wednesday - 6:00 PM some weeks - Paranoia Thursday - 6:30 PM - Magic Booster Draft Saturday - 6:00 PM - Board Game Night (starting 2/26) | | Thursday, January 13th, 2005 | | 8:57 pm |
Operation Game Drop
Phoenix Games is starting a program to get games to U.S. servicemen who are overseas with nothing to do but watch the same old DVDs over and over again. Thousands of American soldiers are in Iraq and Afghanistan. Whether you agree with the wars or not, these brave men and women are doing their duty to their country and deserve our respect and support. Boredom is one of the biggest hardships that soldiers face, so Phoenix Games is working to support our men and women in uniform with Operation Game Drop. We are collecting donations of money and games. The money will be used to purchase games out of our inventory at a significant discount, then the games will be sent to various units in Iraq and Afghanistan for the soldiers to enjoy. Donations can be made at Phoenix Games or through PayPal. To donate through PayPal click the appropriate button below. Note: we are charged a small fee to take credit cards, so more of your donation will reach the troops if you pay with cash or from a PayPal account. The web site for this project is http://www.phoenixgamestore.com/opgamedrop/ For directions to the Store:

Fear not, the Store is fine and unburnt
I was on my way to dreamland when Erin and I noticed flashing lights outside our window. Erin peered out and noticed that there were roaring flames at the Dove's Nest end of the building which contains the Store. This concerned me, since my Store is in the building that contains the Store. We raced up to the Store. We soon ascertained that the shed next to the Dove's Nest was what was in fact burning. However, shed fires can reach 2500 degrees and, if the Fire Department had arrived a few minutes later, the main building would have caught. Furthermore, the propane tank heated to red hot and could have exploded. Fortunately, due to the excellent work of the Sunderland Fire Department and all other Fire Departments that responded to the call so quickly, the damage was minimized. Also, tonight, there was a couch fire set in Squire Village. This is the latest in a series of arsons in Sunderland. Police are offering a reward for any information leading to the arrest of the arsonist. ( Pictures At the Scene ) Current Mood: relieved | | Friday, September 24th, 2004 | | 2:53 am |

Built on the foundation of a traditional fantasy campaign, DragonMech is easy to integrate into any ongoing game, or it can be used on its own. It features extensive rules for fantasy mechs powered by machinery, magic, and manual labor, fully integrated with a host of new classes, feats, skills, and items specially designed for a mech-based fantasy campaign. July 16th Newsletter Note: The humble author of this Newsletter is very tired as he writes this newsletter, so if this seems a little more irreverent than usual, that is why.Kelly's Game Weekend, This WeekendThis weekend, July 16-18 is the long awaited Kelly's Game Weekend. It looks more and more certain that the Kelly mentioned in the name will not actually be attending, but she might surprise us. Either way, it will be a great time, Kelly or not. *Kelly's Game Weekend Line-Up* >>>Friday July 16th to Sunday July 18th<<<
- Friday Overnight - All-Night Gaming Party
- Saturday 6:00 PM - Summer Back Rub Competition
- Saturday 11:59 PM - Rocky Horror Picture Show at Tower Theaters
- Sunday noon - L5R Path of Air Tournament
- Sunday 6:00 PM - HeroClix Ultimates Marquee
Friday night we have the all night gaming party. I have learned from experience that the precise details of such an event are best left to the attendees as they can often devise much more amusing activities than I can on my own. I am fairly sure that we will have Twister as well as a new game called Abuse: the Final insult, the object of which is to come up with the best cutting remarks. Beyond that, I leave the specifics of the evening to the twisted minds that show up...within certain limits. Saturday evening at 6:00 PM after everyone has had time to rest from the previous evening's exertions, Phoenix Games will be hosting the summer quarterly Back Rub Competition. The event is free to enter, and just like in May, we will have a Beginner and Advanced Division. The winner of each division will be first in line to serve as a judge in October. The winner of the Beginner Division will receive a $5 reward certificate to the store. The winner of the Advanced Division will get a $15 reward certificate. Later that evening, we head down to Tower Theaters in South Hadley for the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tickets to the show are $5.75, and the start time is midnight. There is a live cast performing in front of the movie, and if you have never been to a Rocky performance, you are seriously missing out. If you would like to travel there with us, come to the Store before 10:30 PM and you can carpool with us or follow on of our cars. What better way to finish off a weekend than with a Sunday? Quite a Sunday we have as well. At noon we will be running the Legend of the Five Rings Path of Air Tournament. Registration starts at noon, and the first match will begin at 12:30 PM sharp. To enter the tournament, players must purchase three packs. Prizes are limited edition promotional cards and card tins. But wait, there's more: 6:00 PM Sunday brings us the HeroClix Marquee event for the new Ultimates set. The event is a sealed booster event, and entry requires the purchase of three boosters at the our special price of $7 per pack ($22.05 total including tax). Gamer BucksGamer Bucks are here. "What is a Gamer Buck?" you ask. I'm glad you asked because it means you are actually paying attention to this Newsletter. The deal is this: for every $20 you spend at Phoenix Games, you get one Gamer Buck. The Gamer Buck can be used just like a dollar at Frontier Pizza, The Spirit Shoppe, Tower Theaters (home of the Rocky Horror Picture Show in the Valley), and, of course, Phoenix Games. To eliminate confusion for the mathematically challenged, here are some examples of how much you might spend and how many Gamer Bucks you will get: $19.95 -> No Gamer Bucks :( $20 -> 1 Gamer Buck $35 -> 1 Gamer Buck $302 -> 15 Game Bucks (yes, someone did spend that much today) I hope that makes everything relatively clear. Vampire: the Requiem Midnight Release August 20thThe World of Darkness is dead. Long live the World of Darkness. That's right, the new World of Darkness is almost here. The core World of Darkness book and Vampire: the Requiem officially go on sale at 12:01 AM Saturday August 21st. (We will actually be getting the books in a few days before that, so if you want to drool over the covers, feel free to drop by earlier.) We are hoping to actually have a Storyteller to run a demo of Vampire, but we have yet to pin one down. Stay tuned for more details on the event. White Wolf has announced that it will be increasing the size of the World of Darkness book by about 60 pages. The first printing will remain the announced price of $19.95. However, after the first printing, the price will rise to $24.95. In other words, get your book early, and save $5. Get it later and pay more. L5R Wrath of the Emperor Pre-Release August 22ndWhite Wolf is not the only company releasing a new product on the weekend of August 20th. Alderac Entertainment Group will be releasing the new expansion for Legend of the Five Rings called Wrath of the Emperor on August 23rd, but you get to play it on August 22nd here at Phoenix Games. Registration will start at noon. Entry will be $17 and will include one starter and two boosters. Starters will be selected on a first come, first served basis, so come early for best selection. 7-11 Hiring Store ManagersI know that one or two of you out there in Newsletter Land is in the market for a job. It has come to my attention that both of the 7-11s in Sunderland are hiring managers. I don't have any details about this job, but if you are interested, I suggest you drop by 7-11 and inquire. Legend of the Five Rings on the RoadIf you play Legend of the Five Rings, you know of the evils that lurk to the south of Rokugan.
